Auguste Comte: Father of Sociology and Founder of Positivism

How did "sociology" become a discipline in social sciences?
Auguste Comte: Father of Sociology and Founder of Positivism

Before Auguste Comte existed, anyone who shared insights into society was called a philosopher, and there wasn’t a need for proof.

But he believed that it could be studied scientifically, backed by evidence. So, he developed positivism and laid the foundation for sociology as a discipline.

Positivism asserts all genuine knowledge comes from observable, scientific facts and rejects metaphysical speculation

His work provided the tools to study social interactions, phenomena, and institutions with the same rigor as natural sciences.

You can learn more about him below.

Auguste Comte Is the Father of Sociology

Comte is widely recognized as the “Father of Sociology” because he was the first to formally establish the discipline as a science.

Sociology” was a term he coined to describe the scientific study of social structures, institutions, and relationships.

Auguste Comte Developed Positivism

Comte founded positivism, which argues that only observable facts and scientific evidence should be considered valid.

It rejects assumptions that can’t be proven.

Some of Auguste Comte’s Ideas

Comte influenced not only sociology but also other social science fields. Let us look at some of his ideas.

Society Can Be Studied Scientifically

Social behavior, institutions, and structures are not random but follow patterns that can be observed and understood.

Anyone can uncover them by using observation, comparison, and reasoning.

True Knowledge Is Observable and Verifiable

True knowledge must be based on things we can see, measure, and verify. Knowledge without evidence can’t be trusted.

Empiricism focuses on gaining knowledge through sensory experience, while positivism insists that only observable, scientific facts are valid knowledge.

This has become central to modern science and research. Even today, researchers are expected to provide evidence that can be verified by others.

Knowledge Evolves Through Three Stages

Human knowledge evolves through three stages: the theological stage, the metaphysical stage, and the positive stage.

The positive stage is the most advanced because it relies on evidence and rational thinking rather than speculation or faith.

Auguste Comte’s Law of Three Stages

As societies become more scientific, they also become more capable of solving problems and achieving stability.

Learn about the law of three stages below.

Theological Stage

In the theological stage, we explain the world through religion and supernatural beliefs. We believe that the divine controls events.

Below are its three sub-stages:

  • Fetishism (belief in objects having power)
  • Polytheism (belief in many gods)
  • Monotheism (belief in one god)

Metaphysical Stage

In the metaphysical stage, we move away from supernatural explanations and begin to use abstract reasoning to explain events.

This stage doesn’t rely on direct observation or evidence, but it shifts toward more rational thinking. It prepares us for the final stage.

Positive Stage

The positive stage is the final and most advanced stage, where we rely on science, observation, and evidence to explain the world.

We are generally in the positive stage as science guides most institutions, but some may still think in theological or metaphysical ways depending on their beliefs and context.

It represents maturity in human knowledge because it focuses on what can be proven. But it is not only about understanding the world but improving it.

For Comte, science can solve societal problems.
